Robins Air Force Base continued to bolster the local economy in 2009, pouring $4.1 billion into the state and area coffers.
Robins officials released the totals Friday in its annual economic impact statement. The number includes a worker payroll of $1.6 billion, a federal retiree payroll of $617 million and base expenditures in Georgia of $282 million. A Middle Georgia Regional Development Center estimate of $1.6 billion in indirect jobs created by the base is added to reach the $4.1 billion figure.
Robins also issued $5.83 billion dollars in contracts during 2009, an almost $700 million increase from 2008. Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman were the leading beneficiaries. Boeing posted $1.4 billion in contracts, Lockheed just over $1 billion and Northrop Grumman $841 million.
Cobb County businesses led with $229.8 million in contracts. Houston County was second at $177.9 million. Fulton County was a distant third at $40.8 million. Bibb County was sixth at $9.2 million.
Almost 21,000 workers are listed on Robins payrolls — 14,300 are civilians. The Robins reservation encompasses 6,779 acres with 11.4 million square feet spread over 330 buildings. The flightline encompasses almost 2.3 million square yards.
Robins spent more than $19 million for electricity in 2009 and $5.9 million for natural gas. Although the base provides its own water from a series of deep wells, it spent $1.6 million to treat and deliver it to base facilities.
