Helen Hughes, named to the Houston County Board of Education last year following the death of Pamela Greenway, will face a host of challengers at this year’s July 20 special nonpartisan election for the remaining two years of Greenway’s term.

Hughes, appointed to the District 5 post by the board last May, will face Randall P. Hinson, Marsha McGowan Hall and Darin Rase.

For the primary elections that day, the following candidates qualified by last Friday’s noon deadline:

Houston County Commission Chairman, Post 1: Tommy Stalnaker;

Houston County Commission, Post 2: incumbent Jay Walker;

Solicitor General of State Court: incumbent Robert Tawse; and

Clerk of State Court: incumbent Gay B. Valasky.

Anne-Marie Saul, a clerk in the Houston County Board of Elections office, said the above candidates are all Republicans, with no Democrats filing in opposition.

In other local races, state House of Representatives incumbents are unopposed in the primary election but will face challenges in the fall.

District 145 State Rep. Willie Talton of Warner Robins, 66, a Republican, goes up against Democratic challenger Fenika Miller, 34, also of Warner Robins.

District 136 State Rep. Tony Sellier of Fort Valley, 65, a Republican, squares off against Democrat Sharon B. Howard, 39, of Byron.
