GOP gubernatorial candidates debate in Centerville

Republican gubernatorial hopefuls will gather for a “Debate in the Midstate” Tuesday at the Galleria Mall Conference Center.

There will be a meet and greet event from 6-7 p.m., with the debate following from 7-9 p.m.

Candidates at the event will include U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal, Secretary of State Karen Handel, State Sen. Eric Johnson, State Sen. Jeff Chapman, State Rep. Austin Scott and businessman Ray McBerry. John Oxendine, state fire and insurance commissioner, has yet to commit.

Current Gov. Sonny Perdue of Bonaire is finishing his second term and is barred by the state Constitution from seeking a third term.

The candidates will field questions from reporters Jenny Gordon and Gene Rector of The Warner Robins Patriot, WRWR radio news director Joe Bishop, Earl “Trip” Shinn of Macon State College and Shaw Blackmon, CEO of National Bank Products and a board member of the Technical College System of Georgia. Terry Harvin will moderate the debate.

The Galleria Mall is at the corner of Watson Boulevard and Houston Lake Road.
