Westfield’s run at a state championship ended Saturday when the Lady Hornets fell to Trinity Christian 57-40 in the GISA Class AAA state tournament at GCSU in Milledgeville.

“We give Trinity and Coach Rick Johnson such praise,” said Westfield Head Coach Jeff Eubanks. “They were definitely the better team.”

The better team with arguably the better player in all of the GISA in Lady Crusader Anna Claire Knight. She was a big concern for Eubanks – anybody that’s played them – and in the end she performed as advertised. She finished with 28 points while teammate Natalia Underwood had 12. Eric McLure led the Lady Hornets with 10.

And, added Eubanks: “The championship game between Gatewood and Trinity was a great game.”

Gatewood beat Tattnall in its Final Four matchup and then went on to edge Trinity 46-45.

As far as the Lady Hornets, “I am so proud of what these young ladies have accomplished with a region championship and a Final Four appearance,” Eubanks said. “I am thankful for the lessons that they have taught me this year and I feel so blessed to have coached the five senior girls since their eighth grade year.

“It has been such a joy to watch them grow as individuals and to see how they were willing to sacrifice personal gain for the sake of the team.

"I know that I keep saying this but it is the truth, God has truly blessed the Lady Hornets this year.”
