A Peach County man suspected of shoplifting from the Sears department store in the Galleria Mall shot and injured a Houston County sheriff’s deputy Friday at around 1 p.m, according Centerville Public Safety Director Anthony B. Cooper.

The suspect, Ryan Cornelius Rumph, 18, was struggling with a Centerville police officer at police headquarters when he broke free and ran out of the building. He was confronted in the parking lot by sheriff’s deputy Derek Collins. Collins attempted to subdue the man who reportedly grabbed the deputy’s gun and shot him in the finger, according to Cooper. The suspect was then shot by a second Centerville officer.

Collins is being treated at the Houston Medical Center and is expected to make a full recovery. Rumph is being treated at the Medical Center of Central Georgia and is expected to be released into police custody sometime on Saturday. He has previously been arrested for trespassing, stalking, aggravated assault, and burglary.

Nearby Centerville Elementary School was put on lock down and parents were notified via an emergency alert system. Students were dismissed as scheduled according to Robin Hines, the assistant superintendent for operations.
