HOUSTON COUNTY – Huntington Middle School teacher Jason Heath and Houston County High School AFJROTC Cadet Auscia Williams will be presented awards by the Georgia State Air Force Association (AFA) on Aug. 24. Heath has been named Georgia AFA’s Teacher of the Year and Williams has won Outstanding Air Force Junior ROTC Cadet of the Year. They will be recognized during a State Awards Luncheon held at 11:30 a.m. at the Landings Golf Course Clubhouse.

Both honorees were recommended for the state awards after winning the Carl Vinson Memorial Chapter 296 local awards. They are pictured receiving Chapter trophies on Apr. 13, 2013.

The AFA Teacher of the Year award recognizes classroom teachers for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting students about science and math and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow's technologies. This award recognizes teachers who are furthering excellence and making coming to class an adventure. Heath was nominated by his principal, Dr. Gwendolyn Taylor, for his incorporation of technology into the classroom.

Cadet Williams, who graduated in May from Houston County High, was nominated by her instructor, Lt. Col. Judy Jackson, USAF (ret). The Cadet of the Year displays: leadership characteristics which may lead to future positions of responsibility; a positive attitude toward training and all areas of school life; pride in personal appearance and wear of the uniform; personal initiative, judgment, and self-confidence; courtesy, promptness, obedience, and respect for customs; growth potential, capacity for responsibility, high productivity, adaptability to change, the highest personal and ethical standards and strong personal convictions. Although Auscia will be unable to attend the awards luncheon because she will be in school at Georgia State, her mother will accept the award on her behalf.

The mission of AFA is three fold: (1) Educate the public about the need for aerospace power and its role in a strong national defense. (2) Advocate aerospace power and a strong national defense. (3) Support the United States Air Force and the Air Force Family.
