LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Mayor obstructed at every turn
Jan 29, 2011 | 1088 views | 5 5 comments | 8 8 recommendations | email to a friend | print

Your recent letter criticizing Mayor Chuck Shaheen (Letter from Steve Davison) for allegedly pursuing an agenda dedicated to firing his police chief was not substantiated by the facts.

Our mayor tried to suspend our police chief but he was overruled by our city council. The infamous Gang of Four led by Bob Wilbanks prevented the suspension and has pursued a totally obstructionist agenda and personal agenda against our mayor. Their goal is to defeat anything our mayor tries to do by embarrassing him at council meetings, etc.

We have a strong mayor form of city government but he has not been allowed to carry any progressive programs by Mr. Wilbanks, et al.

I wonder how can ol' Brett discipline his employees when he don't take discipline himself. Being the Police Chief he should have told those 4 stooges he would take his punishment like a man. The rest of this city is handed punishment and we have to take it.

I see Brett is no longer walking around with that silly grin. Maybe he will get a bigger suspension when the investigation is over and he can give the 4-stooges a big "THANK" you.

@NativeWR, You need to check your facts. WR council is Strong Mayor / Weak Council. Check with the City Clerk or read the City Charter.

That's why we don't have a city manager like most cities.

Almost correct, Native. Mayor doesn't even vote unless it's a tie.

Strong mayor form (unsubstantiated)? Where'd you read that in the charter; explicit or implied? It's not there. Council controls ordinances and $$ more than the mayor, by far.

The mayor has failed to present a vision for the city (run the city like a business? yea right). He has soundly failed to work with council (whom he needs desperately in order to get anything substantial accomplished because council votes for just about everything substantial).

The mayor's vendetta, ilk, or dislike of the Chief starts as early as Aug '09.

The Mayor DID suspend and the Chief DID serve two days suspension. Your claim that the suspension was "prevented" is not factual.

You know you are in real political trouble when you have Frank Gadbois defending you. His left-leaning political views should be enough to let people know where Shaheen really comes from I guess.

Actually, the City of WR Charter is a strong council/weak mayor model. The mayor is one of 7 votes.

He needs to simply make friends with three council members and he'll never lose on an issue.
