The Bears won 3-2. It was won in the bottom of the seventh - textbook. Hunter Jackson, batting seventh, singled to lead off the inning. Scott Daniel bunted him over to second. A passed ball – not so textbook – got him to third where Trent Jones – back to textbook - sacrificed him home with a fly ball. Ballgame over.
Textbook but there was more to it than that.
Textbook. Austin Wallace’s performance for Houston County. Three hits and the two runs in six and a third innings. He did walk three but also struck out five. Clint Wynn’s performance in the seventh. He came in in relief of Wallace with the bases loaded and one out. He struck out the next two. Not so textbook for Warner Robins was loading the bases with the one out, yet it, too, had its: textbook.
Like Ty Odom on the mound. He gave up five hits in the seven innings and deserved a better fate than his second loss (five wins) of the year – both coming to the Bears. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.
Textbook … well … sort of … were the at bats by Dillon Blackwell for the Demons. He had two of their hits. Both came on the first pitch of his at bat. Both pitches were in his eyes but he simply just reached out and guided them into the outfield – right-center the first time and right the next.
Austin Priaulx had the other hit. He also drew a walk in textbook fashion, drove in a run and scored a run.
Houston County improved to 6-1 in Region 1-AAAA, 13-2 overall with the win. Warner Robins fell to 3-4, 7-7.
Elsewhere things might have started in textbook fashion for Veterans at Mary Persons, that’s apparently not how they progressed. In the end it took a three-run seventh to pull out an 8-7 win.
The Warhawks got up 3-0 after one. A run in the second made it 4-0 before the Bulldogs pushed one across in the bottom of the inning.
Another run in the third made it 5-2.
In the fourth, however, Mary Persons scored two and in the fifth it plated three more to make it 7-4.
Both went scoreless in the sixth before the Warhawks rallied for the win.
Blake Jackson, Micah Wells and Mickey Dugan each had two hits for Veterans, whit out-hit its host 10-6. Jackson was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Wells was also 2-4 – one of those a homerun – with three RBI and a run scored and Dugan was 2-4 with an RBI.
Dylan Spires started and worked four innings for the Warhawks. He gave up six hits, four runs, a walk and struck out two.
Lyndon Meadows was unable to stick around for an inning while giving up three runs – no hits but three walks while R.J. Skeen worked the final three. He didn’t give up a hit or runs, walked two and struck out six.
With the win, Veterans, which has won five straight, improved to 10-1 in Region 2-AAA, 11-6. Mary Persons fell to 13-6, 7-4 in 2-AAA.
At West Laurens, Perry was unable to make two run scored in the second hold up. The Raiders pushed one across in the fourth, fifth and seventh for the win. They committed five errors to the Panthers’ two but also out-hit the visitor 7-4.
Seth Moss went 1-3 with an RBI to lead Perry on offense. Nick Martens worked six and two thirds and took the loss. He gave up the runs and hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out three.
Perry saw its three-game win streak come to an end and fell to 7-4 in 2-AAA, 8-9 overall. West Laurens improved to 11-0 in 2-AAA, 15-2 overall.
