Families and single airmen evacuated from the U.S. Air Force Academy due to wild fires in the Colorado Springs, Colo., area were allowed to return home early Friday.

An Air Force press release indicated that some 2,100 individuals are impacted by the decision issued at 5 a.m. Colorado time.

"Today, it's back to business as usual," Staff Sgt. Heather Stanton, an academy public affairs spokeswoman, is quoted in the release.

"The base exchange, commissary and childcare locations are all open as normal," Stanton added.

Airmen assigned to the academy have 24 hours to sign back in with their chain of command.

Some elements of the academy population will remain at off-site locations. About 111 airmen who lived in dormatories will remain at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. Stanton said no decision has been made for 200 cadets who were moved to the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs campus. Also about 400 cadets in the academy's airmenship program remain with local sponsors.
